Yesterday, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business announced the appointment of Thomas Robertson, former Dean of Emory’s Goizueta School of Business, as its new Dean. Robertson was chosen from a selection of 140+ candidates and a shortlist of 20, on the strength of his achievements at Goizueta, building its endowment and its brand, and due to the fact that he is a known entity at Wharton, where he previously taught and chaired the marketing department.
What is notable about Wharton’s choice is that they continue a trend of hiring from within academia. While students and alumni traditionally hope for prestige hirings from industry, in recent years, Harvard, Chicago, Darden and Yale, among others, have all chosen academics to take the helm of theirs schools.
