Yesterday, former U.S. ambassador to China and former governor of Utah John Huntsman, Jr., announced that he will be running for president of the United States. Why would this matter at Wharton? Well, Wharton’s main building is called John Huntsman Hall, though it was not named after the new presidential candidate, but instead after the candidate’s father, (you guessed it) John Huntsman, Sr., a 1956 University of Pennsylvania alumnus who donated $26M to the school. So, even though junior did not make the donation, the halo effect of having a Huntsman Hall and a possible Huntsman presidency is presumably enticing to Wharton students and administration. Of course, Huntsman has to win to have any incidental impact on Wharton’s prestige.
