The Quest for 700: Weekly GMAT Challenge

Each week Integrated Learning posts a 700 level GMAT question on our blog and follows up with the answer the next day. Are you up for the challenge?

Richard is having his family room painted. Paint X costs $10/gallon and Paint Y costs $7.50/gallon. Paint Y takes one-quarter longer to apply than Paint X. If Richard is paying someone to paint the room, which paint will be cheaper to apply?

(1) The ratio of the area covered by one gallon of Paint X to the area covered by Paint Y is 5:4.

(2) Paint X will require 4 gallons of paint and 10 hours of labor.

(A) if statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked;

(B) if statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked;

(C) if BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question asked, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient;

(D) if EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked;

(E) if statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data specific to the problem are needed.
