The Quest for 700: Weekly GMAT Challenge (Answer)

Yesterday, Integrated Learning posted a 700 level GMAT question on our blog. Today, they have followed up with the answer:

Explanation

For mixture or solution questions, IL recommends building a simple chart to line up the key numbers.  As well, since we have no real numbers, only proportions, we can solve this more easily by plugging in numbers.  In this case, I chose to plug in the number 40 to start with, because I’m taking 1/4 of some number and also 10% of that number.

Step one – the Chart:

This is the generic starting point. You’ve got the Total mixture on the left, the percentage in the middle, and the amount of stuff on the right.

Now, fill in the chart, and don’t be nervous to expand it if you need to:

Finally, work backwards from the info you have to get your answer:

Play with it for a while on different problems. You’ll see it’s a great and easy way to suss out mixture problems.
