The Quest for 700: Weekly GMAT Challenge (Answer)

Yesterday, Integrated Learning posted a 700 level GMAT question on our blog. Today, they have followed up with the answer:

Correct answer:  A

(A) if statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked;

(B) if statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked;

(C) if BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question asked, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient;

(D) if EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked;

(E) if statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data specific to the problem are needed.

Recall that the formula for slope is ila-june-26.JPG.  If L passes through the origin, b, or the y-intercept, is 0, so we have

Given the information in Statement (1), we would have:

ila-june-26-2008.JPG

so the slope is -1. Therefore, the information in Statement (1) is sufficient to answer the question.
The information in Statement (2) is not sufficient to answer the question because it does not tell us anything about x.
Statement (1) alone is sufficient to answer the question.
